For my Learning in the Community activity, I was the Volunteer Coordinator for Refugee International Japan’s 30th anniversary charity event called Rhythm & Hope, held on June 6, 2009 at the New Pier Hall in Tokyo.
Refugees International Japan (RIJ) is a Tokyo-based non-profit dedicated to raising funds to support projects for refugees around the world. RIJ has been working for 30 years to give hope to the 60 million people around the world who have lost so much as a result of war and conflict. The Rhythm & Hope event was “a celebration of the courageous journeys of refugees, a day full of music, art, fashion, food and film.” It featured interactive workshops, a "refugee experience", music by well-known African drummer Latyr Sy and his band, a fashion show by WAfrica, the film "Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars", and presentations by several NGOs.
Personally, I have been involved in refugee issues in Japan for about five years. For my graduate thesis at ICU, I researched and wrote about Japan's domestic refugee policies, and met many refugees and people working in the refugee world in Japan, including MoFA, Ministry of Justice, the UNHCR and other related NGOs.
So when I learned about this year's big RIJ event, I was excited and eager to get involved and contribute. Through my colleague Rachel, I met Jane Best, the CEO of RIJ, in the early spring of 2009, and took responsibility for recruiting and coordinating volunteers for the event.
For the 8 hour event, we had 35 volunteers, both Japanese and foreigners. Impact Japan showed up in force and I want to thank my Impact colleagues Tomoko, Mayumi and Jennifer for their great support. Tomoko was a solid support for coordinating the volunteers. Mayu did an excellent job as translator for the WAfrica fashion show and panel discussion. And Jen helped out by selling raffle tickets at the event. I know RIJ appreciated their contribution, and so did I.
Through my involvement with RIJ, I learned about the challenges of organizing a major event on a limited, NPO budget. It was a good chance to work alongside designers, artists, PR people, event directors and musicians, and to contribute to a worthy cause. It was a challenge organizing so many people of various ages and backgrounds, but thanks to everyone's positive attitude and generous spirit, everything was smooth as silk on the day.
It was an awesome learning experience. I developed a strong working relationship with RIJ’s CEO, Jane, and was inspired by her passion, dedication and integrity.
I am thankful for Impact's encouragement of our volunteer activities. As an organization that promotes our clients' community involvement and responsibility, it is vital that we are able to "walk the talk" and contribute to the communities in which we operate. I am proud to be a part of a team that lives these values.

2009年6月6日、東京のピアホールでRIJ(国際難民支援会)主催の30周年記念イベントRhythm & Hopeが開催されました。『社会における学び』という観点から、私はボランティアのコーディネーターとしてこのイベントに参加しました。
RIJとは東京を基点として活動している非営利団体で、基金を募り難民を支援しています。戦争や紛争で居場所を亡くした世界中の難民、６千万人に対しての支援をしてきました。Rhythm & Hopeはそんな難民の勇敢な道のり、日々の音楽、芸術、ファッション、食や映像を紹介するためのイベントで、難民体験のワークショップ、アフリカのドラマーLatyr Syとそのバンドによる演奏、WAfricaによるファッションショー、ドキュメンタリー映画Sierra Leone Refugee All Starsの上映、NGOからのプレゼンテーションといった様々なアクティビティーから構成されました。
ICUでの卒業論文で日本における難民問題を研究し、政府や国連やNPO/NGOを通して様々なかたちで難民問題と接してから５年が経ちます。RIJのイベントの話を聞いて真っ先に必ず自分も参加したいと強く感じました。2009年の春、同僚のRachelからの紹介でRIJのCEOであるJane Bestと出会い、このイベントに関わり始めました。
8時間のイベントのために35名のボランティアが集結し、私は彼らのコーディネート役を務めました。Impact Japan からはTomoko、Mayu、Jenniferの３名が協力してくれました。Tomokoはボランティアのコーディネートに際して心強いサポートをしてくれました。 Mayu はWAfricaのファッションショーとパネルディスカッションの通訳を見事にやりきってくれました。Jenniferはくじ引き販売の手伝いをしてくれました。RIJがそうであるように私もこの同僚三人の協力に心から感謝しています。
このイベントを通して私は限られた予算の中で最大限のイベントをコーディネートする難しさを学びました。デザイナーや芸術家、広報関係者やイベントディレクター、ミュージシャン達とイベントを創り上げていくという貴重な体験もできました。同時にこのような多くの人々をコーディネートする事は非常に難しいものでもありました。年齢やバックグラウンドも皆様々です。しかし、皆の協力があり、当日は非常にスムーズな運営をする事ができました。
素晴らしい学びがありました。 RIJのCEOであるJaneと共に働く事は自分自身を飛躍させる経験になりました。彼女の情熱や献身さ、誠実さに共感を覚えました。そんな彼女が私のイベント参画に高い価値付けをしていてくれた事は非常に嬉しかったです。
私はインパクトスタッフの参画を心から感謝しています。我々が普段行っているクライアントとのやり取りや何かを創り上げていく過程や手法が役立ちました。そんなインパクトスタッフの一員であることを誇りに思います。
